Someday I swear to actually return

Today I got halfway to Holly, where the Dems were going to have a parade entry for the Gateway Fair and then (big surprise here) do some Voter Reg. Unfortunately, I could not talk myself out of the idea I was about to hurl, and worse, so I just turned around and went back home. Now that I've spent the day in bed, mostly sleeping, I feel a lot better. Good thing, tomorrow is Free Dump Day. Woo-hoo.

In honor of good ol' Paul Newman, I shall tell a story about when my daughter was in middle school, where The Clone was librarian. I had dropped by for some reason or other, and she had joined us. A new issue of Newsweek was on the counter, talking about the new movie The Color of Money.

"Hmm," she said. "That old guy on the cover with Tom Cruise? He's kind of cute."

Yes. Yes, he was.

Favorite Newman's Own product: Parmesan & Roasted Garlic Dressing

CONNIE WILLISES IN THE NEWS: I happened across this link in the online version of the Rocky Mountain News today. The paper is sponsoring a collection of short stories, one per decade, to celebrate Denver turning 150, and she wrote one. You can read it by clicking the link...it's short, but of course well worth your time.

Seems like I was going to post something else, but I can't remember what. Sucks to be my brain....

Whooshing past

Wow, it's been almost two weeks since my last 'touching base' post. Short explanation: I have been working on a Voter Reg/Switch to Vote by Mail project in my county. Like most projects, there were more details than I expected, and everything takes longer than you think it will. But it's going pretty well, and I think it has been worth the doing.

So last Thursday I was sitting at one of our sites that happened to have wifi access. While catching up with LiveJournal, I saw this meme:

Take a picture of yourself right now. Don’t change your clothes. Don’t fix your hair. Just take a picture. Post that picture with no editing. (Except maybe to get the image size down to something reasonable. Don’t go posting an eight megapixel image.) Include these instructions.

So here's a pic of me at the Granada Town Hall Community Room. I admit, I took several. It's kind of hard to take a picture of yourself, you know? I chose this one to post:

As I was deciding, it occurred to me that my celebrity look-alike has changed over the years. It used to be songwriter Paul Williams, sad to say.

But he has lost weight and grown a goatee since the 70s, and I have not. However, one of my other pics reminded me strongly of one I'd seen of Brooke McEldowney, the guy who draws Pibgorn and 9 Chickweed Lane. I went looking and found it...what do you think? Separated at birth?

Until he grows a goatee or something....

My town, bean players and all

I'm behind again...I had to leap up and get started on our last month of voter registration, because the deadline will be here before you know it!

While I was wandering around the Wal-mart waiting to pick up the magic pills that keep Mike from zapping into hyperspace on a daily basis, I saw this great sign.

I know, they look so tempting, right?

How about a regular post for a change?

I didn't realize it until I was out and about today, but you know what I missed while I was in Denver? (Besides my family, of course.)

The sky.

Maybe I noticed it especially today because it was gorgeous out. A high of 73, only a mild breeze, and little paintbrush squishes of clouds way, way up in a sky that brilliant shade of bright blue you only see in early fall. Even in town you can see almost the entire 180 degree dome of sky above you, and when the conditions are perfect, like they were today, it can take your breath away for a second.

Moving from the sublime to the mundane, one of my errands today was to buy a new microwave. Our old faithful one rolled over and died as I was getting ready to heat up some lunch. At first I was afraid that what had failed was the wall socket it was plugged into, which would have been a giant pain to get right again. So I was actually relieved when I finally found the right breaker switch, reset it, and everything in that corner of the kitchen EXCEPT the microwave started going again.

The new one is very black and shiny, so much so that I think we will call it Darth MicroVader.
