He Is Not Always Fierce

An innocent remark

I've been reminded of a little anecdote I meant to tell by reading several of the very good posts from people I know, respect and love who are posting things for Blog Against Racism Week.

As you know, our boy Mike LOVES trains with a passion, and spends a lot of his allowance money on train videos. We were watching one together a while back, which had people riding on a restored fancy passenger train. An older woman, black and probably in her mid sixties was being interviewed about her trip so far, which she gave her hearty approval to.

Mike listened, then nodded and sighed his agreement that a trip like that would be heaven. "She loves trains!" he said. "She's JUST LIKE ME!"

(If I could, I'd take credit for raising him to have that attitude, but I think it's all just him.)

Houston, We Have A Door

The last few steps were a bit of a fight, off and on, but hey, what would I do for a sense of satisfaction if it had turned out to be EASY? Anyway, that means two doors down, one to go for those of you keeping score at home.

While we were in town, we stopped to see if the lawnmower was ready to be released into our custody. It was indeed in the outgoing line. Mike capered in glee, yelling, "Yay! Yay! I get to MOW!"

The repair shop guy gave me a look of the purest green envy I have seen in a while. Yes, I have the only 14 year old boy for miles around who is thrilled at the idea of being allowed to mow the lawn.

Mike has been trying lots of new things and acquiring lots of new skills this summer. We let him light our modest little batch of home fireworks, and he did a (heh) bang-up job. He has also wound several nice big yarn balls to make into toys for his kitten. And although he isn't quite up to working the drill yet, he's been a big help while I was working on the doors. Although I am not sure that it is a good thing for his vocabulary, to be around me when I break off a saw blade or something....

In other news, I managed to get a few good shots of Souvenirs Gone Wild.

Here he is in stalking mode...waiting...waiting....

Human Flesh! It's what's for dinner!

Until they unkindly remove their fingers from your feast!
